Illinois high school teacher indicted by federal grand jury on child porn charges

A high school physical education teacher and cross country coach is hopefully rethinking some life choices after he was indicted by a federal grand jury on child pornography possession and distribution charges today.

Investigators discovered 90 videos and 176,000 images on Douglass Mynatt’s iPhone; over half of them depicted girls as young as 6-9 years old in sexually compromising situations. Mynatt, 56, apparently admitted to using his phone to trade child porn through an instant messaging app, which initially alerted authorities to the activity through its association with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. It was also confirmed that he accessed these files through his phone, both at home and while at work. The app originally tracked him sending files in January, and after reporting him, disabled his account, but Mynatt, not to be deterred, just created a new one. He was arrested in April and was immediately placed on paid administrative leave at University of Illinois Laboratory High School (“Uni High” to most), a school he’d worked at for a whopping 22 years. He was held by the U.S. Marshals Service until this recent indictment.

In a feature for Uni High’s Facebook page four years ago, Mynatt shared what he liked to do in his spare time (aside from trading child porn, anyway): “If I’m coaching, I don’t usually have free time. When I’m not coaching, I enjoy working in my yard, listening to music, fanatically following University of Tennessee sports… If I weren’t doing any of that, I’d be driving and traveling anywhere. I love to drive.”

Looks like Mynatt, who is married with a young son, isn’t likely to be doing any driving anytime soon. If convicted, he stands to serve at least 5 to 20 years in prison for every count of child pornography distribution, and up to 10 years for each count of child porn possession.

University Laboratory High School in Urbana, Illinois, serves approximately 300 students in grades 8 through 12. It has a primarily white and Asian student body, and parents sing the school’s praises on GreatSchools, with one touting it as “one of the elite public high schools in the nation.”

Just watch out for the pedos.

High School Teacher charged with child rape, molestation, pornography

A high school teacher in Washington was arrested and charged last week with two counts of first-degree rape of a child, two counts of first-degree child molestation, and with one count each of first-degree possessing and distributing depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct after police discovered he was making and trading pornographic material featuring a young child. Further investigation determined he was raping a young boy on numerous occasions.

Stuart MacGregor Hoffman, 28, of Bellevue, is being held in King County Correctional Facility in Seattle in lieu of $1 million bail after being charged. Federal charges appear to be forthcoming, presumably because of the international nature of the crime: Hoffman was exchanging pedophilic photos and videos with a man in Britain, who himself had been assaulting a 2-year-old. The apprehension of the British man is what led police to Hoffman.

Email exchanges between the two parties were disgusting, with Hoffman bragging to his colleague that he regularly succeeded in bribing the child with food to allow him to do what he wanted, also lamenting the fact that COVID-19 isolation kept him from continuing the abuse, and why-oh-why hadn’t he begun video taping the abuse when he began 6 years ago, because 5-year-olds are so much better… You get the idea.

Hoffman, a Career and Technical Education teacher at Newport High School, was put on administrative leave (mostly likely with his $77,000/year salary intact) pending the results of the investigation. He has since been removed from the school’s website.

Newport High School, in Bellevue, Washington, serves approximately 1800 students in grades 9-12 and ranks exceptionally high for college readiness, test scores, equity, and diversity.

Former elementary school principal sentenced in child porn case

Another “pillar of the community” has been exposed as being nothing more than a pedophilic dirtbag. And, hey: he served the education community for nearly 40 years! But that could never happen in your neck of the woods, right?

Frank Richard Beyer, 75, known to most as Rick Beyer, named National Role Model by Minority Access in 2018 and a longstanding campaigner of LGBTQ+ rights – and, oh yeah, former elementary school principal – was sentenced on Monday to 97 months in prison in a Fort Lauderdale court after pleading guilty in March to possessing child pornography that included images of boys under age 12 engaged in sex acts and exposing their genitals.

Beyer was uploading vast quantities of videos and images of man-on-boy and boy-on-boy sex acts via Dropbox and using a Gmail account, which alerted authorities.

In April 2019, Google noticed a subscriber uploaded a picture of “a nude prepubescent child laying inside a tanning bed with an erect penis” to the account linked to rickbefll@gmail.com. Dropbox already had sent two Cybertip reports that rickbefll@gmail.com had uploaded 20 files of child pornography, including a video of two boys performing oral sex on each other. (source: Miami Herald)

Beyer was also making use of Mega.nz, which is apparently a cloud storage site that pedophiles love to store their sick garbage on because it’s outside of the United States and fully encrypted.

Authorities obtained a search warrant for Beyer in November 2019 and a perusal of his home led to more images and videos, because what else was he supposed to do retired for 17 years in Florida: fish? Since then, investigations have yielded over 1,200 videos and 4,000 pictures depicting child pornography. It was also found that he communicated with another person via an encrypted chat program and shared some of his “wealth” with that individual.

Beyer graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1966 and worked for Syracuse School District in Syracuse, NY from 1967 to his retirement in 2002, when he moved to Florida. During that time he worked in district offices, as a sixth grade teacher, and as an elementary school principal. Investigators are now asking for more information about Beyer’s teaching career (and potential victims during that time).

Two schools where Beyer is said to have worked include Seymour Elementary School (where he was principal) and Lincoln Middle School, both of which have high minority populations and a large percentage (90% or more) of students from low-income families.

How COVID-19 has transformed the way children are “educated”

covid

No matter where you stand on the topic of coronavirus and its infiltration into our way of life, and life itself, there is no question that it has dramatically changed the way America is living, working, and schooling.

With the push to shut down all non-essential services, schools were among the first to close (perhaps, as many have claimed, signifying that they aren’t as “essential” as originally perceived), with the exception of New York City, which held out as long as possible even as the world around them burned, not because schools were providing for the education of children, but because many underprivileged in New York practically live there and depend upon them for nearly everything.  But even New York eventually capitulated, and the country, for better or for worse, has gotten a taste of what home education looks like.

Or do they?

While it’s true that many families are being forced to “homeschool” in the most literal sense of the word, what many people are calling “crisis schooling” or at the very least “public school at home” does not in any way resemble what most true homeschools do on a daily basis when not confronted with a pandemic. The stress of constantly being at home, coupled with deadlines, new apps to master, meetings, and countless assignments presided over by harried parents who are juggling childcare, work responsibilities, and other household tasks has left many families feeling burned out before they have even really begun, and one has to wonder how much learning is actually taking place at all. It’s no wonder that President Trump is asking states to consider reopening schools before summer, and the economy is only half of the argument.

With every family struggling to hang on and continue schooling during the pandemic, there’s another family that is giving up. “I’d rather have him watch classic Godzilla movies and play in the yard and pretend to be a Jedi rather than figure out basic math,” one mother said of her frustrated kindergartener (most long-term homeschoolers agree that formal schooling for kindergarten is unnecessary and that play is precisely what they need at that age). Many school districts are implementing a lax grading policy, exercising leniency with assignments and deadlines. California is considering beginning the new school year as early as July to help make up for lost time.

But despite what The Washington Post and Harvard have to say, true homeschooling does not have to equal deprivation, for children or their parents, and certainly not for society. Homeschooled children consistently outperform their peers in academics and social situations. Universities are by-and-large happy to have homeschoolers join their ranks, and many have alternate pathways to admission, for those who don’t have an accredited diploma or traditional transcript. Homeschoolers are used to free-time (it’s amazing what can be accomplished without all the needless busywork, and pandering to political correctness), and many can use it wisely in the pursuit of valuable hobbies or skills that could be used in their future careers.

One thing remains certain: most of those who were homeschooling before this pandemic hit are suffering just as much as their public schooled peers. Their regular haunts -museums, libraries, parks, friends’ houses, co-ops, playgrounds – are all closed. Most will acknowledge that true homeschooling is more like world-schooling, with only a small portion actually taking place at home.
