Illinois high school teacher indicted by federal grand jury on child porn charges

A high school physical education teacher and cross country coach is hopefully rethinking some life choices after he was indicted by a federal grand jury on child pornography possession and distribution charges today.

Investigators discovered 90 videos and 176,000 images on Douglass Mynatt’s iPhone; over half of them depicted girls as young as 6-9 years old in sexually compromising situations. Mynatt, 56, apparently admitted to using his phone to trade child porn through an instant messaging app, which initially alerted authorities to the activity through its association with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. It was also confirmed that he accessed these files through his phone, both at home and while at work. The app originally tracked him sending files in January, and after reporting him, disabled his account, but Mynatt, not to be deterred, just created a new one. He was arrested in April and was immediately placed on paid administrative leave at University of Illinois Laboratory High School (“Uni High” to most), a school he’d worked at for a whopping 22 years. He was held by the U.S. Marshals Service until this recent indictment.

In a feature for Uni High’s Facebook page four years ago, Mynatt shared what he liked to do in his spare time (aside from trading child porn, anyway): “If I’m coaching, I don’t usually have free time. When I’m not coaching, I enjoy working in my yard, listening to music, fanatically following University of Tennessee sports… If I weren’t doing any of that, I’d be driving and traveling anywhere. I love to drive.”

Looks like Mynatt, who is married with a young son, isn’t likely to be doing any driving anytime soon. If convicted, he stands to serve at least 5 to 20 years in prison for every count of child pornography distribution, and up to 10 years for each count of child porn possession.

University Laboratory High School in Urbana, Illinois, serves approximately 300 students in grades 8 through 12. It has a primarily white and Asian student body, and parents sing the school’s praises on GreatSchools, with one touting it as “one of the elite public high schools in the nation.”

Just watch out for the pedos.

Shooting at high school leaves one student injured, one suspect at-large

All schools in the Sheridan School District in Sheridan, Colorado are closed today after a shooting Tuesday evening during a volleyball game that sent one student from a neighboring district to the hospital. The suspect is still on the loose, and while the district insists this is an “isolated incident,” they insist that all schools need to be closed.

The shooting took place in the parking lot of Sheridan High School during a girls’ volleyball game between the school and the Bruce Randolph School in Denver.

Sheridan School District No. 2 (oddly enough, the No. 1 appears to be in Wyoming) serves students in 5 schools in Sheridan, Colorado.

Sheridan High School in Sheridan, Colorado has a student population (grades 9-12) of 369 students, 78% of whom are Hispanic. They grossly underperform on math and reading, compared with the state average. Eighty-seven percent of students meet income eligibility requirements for free lunch.

There is no mention of the shooting on Sheridan School District’s website other than a big red “All Day Closure,” banner up top, also reading, “Sheridan School District 2 is closed today, October 9, 2019 due to an incident last night.” Nice and cryptic. They do have a much more direct message on their front page about accepting all students regardless of immigration status, and their refusal to support separating children from their families at the border.

The Bruce Randolph School in Denver, Colorado serves 795 students in grades 6-12. Ninety percent of their student population is Hispanic, with another 9% listed as black. They perform even worse on standardized tests than those at Sheridan, with only 5% meeting math proficiency requirements, and 14% demonstrating reading proficiency. Eighty-eight percent of students are eligible for free lunch. The school is within Denver Public School District. No mention of the shooting is on their website at all.

Boys will be boys, they say. Somehow I don’t think that defense is going to work in the favor of four 15-year-old Maryland boys accused of sexual assault.

The four junior varsity athletes accused, namely Jean Claude “JC” Abedi, Kristian “KJ” Jamal Lee, Will Daniel Smith, and Caleb Thorpe, will be tried as adults; three are charged with two counts of first-degree rape and two counts of attempted rape, while the fourth is charged with four counts of first-degree rape. The incidents in question apparently took place within the freshman locker room of Damascus High School in Damascus, Maryland, on Halloween of this year. The students were apparently readying for football practice when someone turned off the lights, and the assaults took place. The students stopped when they were alerted of their coach’s approach.

They’re excuse? “It’s tradition.” Well, so’s jailtime for assaulting people.

Besides eyewitness testimony, the suspects also engaged in conversation about the incident on Snapchat. Because apparently the old adage about dumb jocks rings true.

Damascus High School was established in 1950 and is part of the Montgomery County Public School System. It serves approximately 1200 students within grades 9 through 12. It ranks in the top 5% of Maryland schools in overall test scores. Minority enrollment at Damascus High is 39%, which is nearly half that of Maryland’s average. Their website neglects to mention anything regarding the assaults on school property. Today’s announcements made sure to include volunteer opportunities, SAT prep information, and details about school performances. You know: the important stuff.

The accused students face up to life in prison if convicted.
